La Plata municipal administration and projects

The administration of La Plata Mayor Julio Alak has faced scrutiny regarding public security and management capacity. Former Secretary of Culture and Education Martiniano Ferrer Picado has criticized the current term as the most deficient of Alak’s leadership. Ferrer Picado cited rising insecurity, noting that residents are increasingly organizing via WhatsApp due to slow police response times. He also questioned the reliability of official crime statistics, alleging discrepancies between municipal reports and those released by provincial officials. Furthermore, he alleged improvisation, a lack of political training among leadership, and irregularities regarding urban interventions and commercial licensing.

In contrast to these criticisms, the municipal government, alongside Buenos Aires Province Infrastructure Minister Gabriel Katopodis, has highlighted ongoing infrastructure and cultural developments. Recent inspections by Katopodis and local officials confirm the advancement of several strategic works in La Plata. These include the restoration of the historic Martín Fierro Amphitheater (Teatro del Lago) in Paseo del Bosque, which involves renovating the stage, dressing rooms, and administrative areas, as well as the addition of a museum and café.

Further connectivity and mobility projects include the construction of a new 2.1 kilometer distributor in City Bell on the Buenos Aires-La Plata Highway, intended to connect Camino Parque Centenario with the highway and benefit approximately 36,000 users. Additionally, paving works continue on Avenida 155 in Melchor Romero to improve drainage and mobility.
