Labor Day celebrations and observations

Labor Day celebrations and observations were held across various regions. In Detroit, unions organized a march and rally in the Corktown neighborhood, while Bermuda hosted marches, speeches from Premier David Burt, and community events such as a 5K run.

In the United States, the holiday served as a platform to discuss labor rights and community milestones. In New Jersey, AFL-CIO President Charles Wowkanech highlighted the necessity of protecting collective bargaining, worker safety, and paid leave. Meanwhile, in the Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana region, religious leaders reflected on the nature of labor, and the Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana Mission Endowment Fund announced a banquet to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Recent celebrations in Boston and New York City featured large-scale marches organized by regional labor councils to demonstrate worker solidarity. In Boston, the Greater Boston Labor Council led a parade through Copley Square involving groups such as the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the Boston Teachers Union (BTU), SAG-AFTRA, and the United Auto Workers (UAW). Senator Ed Markey attended the event, stating the gathering was “proof of the power held by working people.”

In New York City, the New York City Central Labor Council organized the ‘Our City, Our Fight, Our Future’ rally in Zuccotti Park. Participants marched to Foley Square to honor 9/11 victims and address social issues including immigration enforcement and women’s rights. Keynote speakers included representatives from unions such as 32BJ SEIU, NYSNA, and TWU.
