Labour dispute at Abuja Continental Hotel

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Hotel and Personal Services Senior Staff Association (HOPSSSA) engaged in industrial action against the Abuja Continental Hotel. On August 24, 2026, unions picketed the entrance and blocked gates to protest alleged anti-labour practices, specifically claiming management prevents employees from joining unions and engaging in collective bargaining.

Union representatives stated they had attempted to resolve the dispute through dialogue since early August, but management reportedly deferred discussions until late November due to renovations. In response, hotel management rejected the allegations of unfair practices, asserting that they respect the constitutional right to freedom of association and that union membership must remain voluntary.

Following the blockade, the hotel remained operational by activating security and business-continuity measures. Management leadership condemned the protest as unnecessary, stating they had responded to union correspondence in good faith by proposing meetings, which the unions allegedly failed to reciprocate before initiating the physical blockade.
