The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Lagos State Government are developing infrastructure projects at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) to enhance connectivity and passenger experience. A central component of these efforts is the extension of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line directly into the airport. The proposed rail link is intended to connect the airport’s passenger terminals and cargo facilities to the existing Red Line via five internal stops, providing seamless access between the airport and the Lagos city center. Financing discussions for the rail this extension have reached an advanced stage through collaboration between the Nigerian Federal Government and FAAN. Alongside Recent developments include the rail project, broader approval of a monorail design intended to connect the Ikeja Railway Station to MMIA. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo announced that the approved design features five planned stations: Ikeja Station, Domestic Airport Station, Beesam Station, Toll Gate Station, and the MMIA Airport Station. This monorail is intended to provide an alternative to congested road routes by linking the terminus of the Lagos Red Line to the airport. The monorail will serve Terminal 1, which is currently undergoing a comprehensive reconstruction and modernization program to improve passenger processing, immigration, and customs facilities. Broader modernization efforts at MMIA also include the construction of an overhead bridge connecting Terminals 1 and 2, structural facade improvements, improvements and the implementation of updated baggage handling and check-in technologies. FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Onabanjo-Kuku noted that Lagos handles 68 percent of Nigeria’s air traffic.
