Lake Ohrid UNESCO protection extension

Overview

In late July 2026, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, meeting in Busan, voted against placing the trans‑border Lake Ohrid region on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Instead, the Committee granted Albania and North Macedonia a five‑year extension to implement its recommendations, citing ongoing concerns about uncontrolled urban growth, illegal construction, and tourism‑related pressure on the lake’s natural and cultural values. Both governments pledged tighter urban‑planning controls, completion of a trans‑boundary strategic environmental impact assessment, and stronger institutional coordination.

A follow‑up report in early August reiterated the five‑year window while highlighting divergent progress between the two states. North Macedonia had already advanced a detailed management strategy and formed an inter‑institutional implementation group, whereas Albania’s efforts were described as limited. Environmental experts warned that without strong political will the extension might produce little result, and some argued that a danger listing could have spurred greater international pressure on the authorities.

By mid-August, local officials reported progress toward the 2030 deadline. Ohrid Mayor Kiril Pecakov noted improvements in meeting UNESCO requirements and highlighted high-level cooperation between North Macedonia and Albania. UNESCO has requested the formation of a working group to monitor specific measures and recommendations. A new progress report is expected in early February 2027. Experts, including professor Sasho Korunovski, emphasized that maintaining this status is vital, as it serves as a “primary brand for foreign tourists.”
