Following the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, McLaren driver Lando Norris has been involved in a dispute regarding the implementation of the Virtual Safety Car (VSC). Norris expressed frustration that the VSC timing negatively impacted race results, specifically after he lost a leading position because the VSC was triggered by a mechanical failure on Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin just after Norris had passed the pit entry. This timing prevented him from benefiting from a ‘free’ pit stop, unlike rivals Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen. Mclaren Team Principal Andrea Stella defended the race direction as following existing regulations, though he suggested the F1 community might need to reflect on whether to change procedures to ensure fairness. Analyst Martin Brundle characterized the situation as being “more like a robbery” and proposed that the VSC remain active for at least one full lap to provide equal opportunity for all drivers to pit. Adding to the debate, former driver Johnny Herbert suggested that pit stops should be prohibited entirely during VSC periods to prevent strategic advantages.
