Larissa gas power plant project
Overview
In early August 2026 the consortium behind a new 870 MW natural‑gas power plant in Larissa, Greece, completed the selection of an EPC contractor, with Greek firm GEK TERNA named the builder and a contract signing scheduled for later that day. The consortium, comprising DEPA Trading, Clavenia, Sirec Energy and Volton, indicated that a Final Investment Decision would be taken by the end of the year and that a Mitsubishi turbine, capable of up to 20 % hydrogen blend, would be delivered in 2029.
The following day the AVAX Group announced it had signed a contract with Larissa Thermoelectric to study, construct and operate an 800 MW (net 794 MW) combined‑cycle plant using Mitsubishi Power’s M701JAC technology, the first of its kind in Europe. The agreement reaffirmed the same partner shares and set a timeline for a Final Investment Decision before the end of 2026, with construction expected to last about 38 months. Both updates underscore the project's rapid progression toward construction and its role in Greece’s energy transition.
