Last Sentinel game development turmoil
Entities: Troy Baker · LAST SENTINEL · Steve Martin · Los Angeles · Lightspeed Studios
Overview
In late July 2026, Lightspeed LA announced a major shift in the creative and development direction of its upcoming AAA open‑world title LAST SENTINEL after internal reviews and early play‑testing indicated the project was not meeting expectations. The studio said the change would affect several staff roles and promised support and possible internal transfers, while also noting a delay to the game's release.
Within days, Tencent, the game's primary investor, terminated development of LAST SENTINEL altogether. Citing continued poor play‑test results, Tencent halted further funding, cancelled the project and laid off about 80 studio employees. The cancellation ended the six‑year, multi‑hundred‑million‑dollar effort to bring the futuristic Tokyo‑set game to market.
