The enforcement drive that began in early July 2026 with police raids on illegal handcrafted alcohol and contraband cigarettes in Ecuador and Colombia has broadened into a region‑wide food‑safety campaign. Within weeks, authorities moved from targeting illicit tobacco and alcohol to seizing unsafe meat, unregistered cosmetics and other hazardous food products across Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia and Argentina. High‑profile actions included the raid on the "Don Choripollo" butcher shop in Maracaibo, where decomposing meat washed in chemicals was uncovered, and coordinated inspections in Quito that led to the removal of over 100 lb of unfit meat and the temporary closure of a pest‑infested restaurant.

Colombian forces dismantled a clandestine horse‑meat operation in Bucaramanga, confiscating 1.4 tonnes of illegally processed meat along with weapons, while cattle lacking health certificates were seized in Norte de Santander. Argentine municipal inspections continued to enforce consumer‑rights standards.

In the last week of July, Ecuador’s national sanitary agency (Arcsa) shut down a restaurant in El Carmen after finding rusted refrigeration, contaminated utensils, a dead rodent, and insect infestations, and seized 805 dairy items—yogurts and cheeses—from a plant in Guaytacama for laboratory testing due to labeling and storage violations. These successive actions underscore a sustained, coordinated effort to tighten food‑and‑consumer safety enforcement throughout Latin America.
