Latin American aviation market trends and costs
Overview
Latin American aviation executives have identified a shift in consumer behavior where travelers show an increased willingness to pay higher airfares, prioritizing travel experiences over physical goods.
Despite this demand, the industry faces significant economic pressures. Fuel costs have risen by 79%, now representing approximately 38% of airline expenses. Industry leaders noted the difficulty of managing ticket pricing amidst unpredictable fuel spikes and high operational costs.
Regional regulatory developments are also influencing the market. At the 22nd ALTA AGM & Airline Leaders Forum in Mexico City, discussions highlighted Argentina’s ‘open skies’ policy, which is encouraging new market entrants. Specifically, JOY Airline has been authorized to connect Jujuy with Buenos Aires and Córdoba, while JetSmart Chile has received potential authorization to operate domestic services in Argentina under ninth freedom rights. However, LATAM CEO Roberto Alvo noted that while the Argentine market is vital, the company’s current priority remains international routes.
In Mexico, the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) is undergoing a second phase of remodeling, scheduled for completion by December 15. This follows the lifting of U.S. restrictions on new flights. Additionally, the Mexican government has authorized cargo airlines to resume operations at AICM during non-peak hours to facilitate trade, reversing previous restrictions on dedicated cargo operations. Despite these developments, ALTA CEO Peter Cerdá warned that high tax burdens in countries like Mexico could deter tourists.
