Latin American Catholic clergy social advocacy

Overview

Catholic religious leaders across several Latin American nations have issued various calls for social reform, peace, and the protection of human dignity.

In Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia, and Mexico, clergy emphasized that addressing violence, corruption, and insecurity requires internal moral transformation and a commitment to charity and respect for the vulnerable. Leaders in these regions highlighted that social vices have contributed to increased crime and a loss of values.

In Ecuador and Bolivia, the focus expanded to include specific calls for ethical civic engagement and the reduction of social fragmentation. The Ecuadorian Episcopal Conference urged citizens to participate in upcoming elections with a ‘conscious, free, and informed vote,’ warning against the sale of consciences. Meanwhile, religious leaders in Bolivia addressed the ‘culture of blockades’ and the normalization of violence, advocating for a ‘culture of peace’ and dialogue to overcome national polarization.
