Latin American climate impact relief efforts

Overview

In Peru and Honduras, government agencies have initiated relief efforts to combat the impacts of drought and El Niño. In Peru’s Cusco region, the Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) has implemented preventive measures such as distributing camelid feed and enhancing irrigation technology to mitigate a drought expected to last through December. In Honduras, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) reported cattle deaths due to drought. Minister Moisés Molina announced immediate food aid and a four-year livestock support program valued at up to 50 million lempiras to improve animal nutrition and resilience.

In Mexico, local governments have also provided support to rural sectors, including the distribution of forage to livestock producers in San Luis Potosí and a tilapia restocking program in Sinaloa. Meanwhile, in Peru, the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis) has provided emergency food and water to families in Villa El Salvador affected by flooding and sewage system failures.
