Overview

The mining and extractive sectors in Latin America have shown significant operational and economic activity throughout late 2026.

In late September, individual companies across Chile, Peru, Argentina, and Ecuador reported progress in production and sustainability. Notable developments included gold mineralization discoveries in Chile and Argentina, copper production scaling in Peru, and significant waste recycling achievements in Chile and Ecuador.

By early October, export data highlighted a divergence between extractive industries and agricultural sectors. In Colombia, total exports rose 15.1% in August to US$4,456.2 million, a trend driven by a 127% surge in non-monetary gold and a 23.8% increase in fuels, even as agricultural, food, and beverage exports fell by 16% due to declines in coffee and cocoa.

Peru reported strong performance in both mining and fruit sectors. Copper exports reached US$19,455 million in the first half of 2026, with China receiving 70% of shipments. Additionally, fruit and vegetable exports grew 14.9% between January and July, totaling US$3,929 million.

In Argentina, the mining sector recorded a US$543 million surplus in August, representing a 61.8% year-on-year increase, while the grain market showed mixed results with significant volumes of soy remaining unpriced for sale.
