Latin American oil and gas production trends

Latin American oil and gas production and market activity have shown significant movement. In mid-August 2026, regional producers such as Argentina’s YPF, Brazil’s Petrobras, and Colombia’s Ecopetrol saw stock gains following a rise in WTI crude prices. Specifically, YPF experienced a 5.29% increase driven by interest in the Vaca Muerta shale project.

By September 2026, data from the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (Olacde) indicated that regional oil production reached 318 million barrels in April, representing a 10% increase compared to the previous year. Production remains concentrated, with Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela accounting for 70% of the total. Natural gas production also saw growth, rising 8.5% year-over-year, led by contributions from Argentina and Trinidad and Tobago.

While gas production reached 21.7 billion cubic meters, Olacde noted that regional trade integration remains uneven. Although over 70% of the gas produced in the area is consumed domestically, 65% of imported natural gas still originates from outside the region. This highlights a documented need for improved cross-border infrastructure and trade agreements. Additionally, while the region covers 54% of its oil import value through local markets, 79% of exportable production is sent to global markets.
