Latin American taxi driver protests against ride-sharing

Overview

Taxi drivers in South America have initiated actions to demand stricter regulations for digital ride-hailing platforms.

In Quito, Ecuador, members of the Asociación de Taxistas de Pichincha protested an agreement between the Unión de Taxis de Pichincha and Uber. The protesters argued the partnership was formed without broad consultation and raised concerns regarding labor precarity and unfair competition. They are calling for the Ecuadorian government to implement the Organic Law of Land Transport, Traffic, and Road Safety to establish a formal regulatory framework.

Similarly, in Esquel, Argentina, local authorities are addressing concerns from taxi workers regarding the irregular operation of Uber. Officials reported that the Deliberative Council is working to draft an ordinance to organize passenger transport, aiming to address issues of unfair competition and legal complexities related to accidents involving ride-sharing services.
