Latvia Hunter combat vehicle procurement
Overview
Latvia has begun receiving its first Hunter infantry combat vehicles, produced by Santa Bárbara Sistemas, a Spanish subsidiary of General Dynamics. The delivery of the first vehicle was marked by a ceremony attended by Latvian Defense Minister Raivis Melnis.
Under two contracts valued at approximately €800 million, Latvia aims to acquire a total of 84 vehicles by 2029. Locally referred to as ‘Mednieks’, these ASCOD-based vehicles are intended to replace the British-made CVR(T) tracked armored vehicles. The procurement includes a 30% local industrial participation rate, with final assembly being conducted in Latvia through a joint venture between Patria Latvia and Unitruck.
The vehicles feature NATO Level 4 armor protection and are equipped with an Elbit Systems UT30 Mk2 unmanned turret, an automatic cannon, and anti-tank missiles. The modernization program is expected to enhance the mobility and protection of Latvian mechanized units while developing national technological capabilities.
