Latvian post-election coalition negotiations
Overview
Following the 15th Saeima elections in Latvia, political parties have begun maneuvering to form a new governing coalition.
Ainārs Šlesers, leader of ‘Latvija pirmajā vietā’ (LPV), expressed ambitions to join the next government and proposed a coalition with ‘Apvienotais saraksts’ (AS). While provisional results suggested a combined majority of 58 seats between the two, AS leader Andris Kulbergs stated he does not wish to cooperate with LPV. Šlesers also criticized ‘Jaunā Vienotība’ (JV), suggesting they be excluded from any new coalition.
In response to the election results, JV indicated readiness to serve in either a new coalition or the opposition. Provisional data shows AS as the winner with 35.3% of the vote, followed by LPV with 13.1%. JV received 6.36% of the vote. JV representatives met with President Edgars Rinkēvičs to discuss their vision, identifying AS, Nacionālā apvienība (NA), and Progresīvie as potential partners. The party’s priorities include maintaining Euro-Atlantic orientation, supporting NATO, and increasing defense spending to 5% of GDP.
