Launch and activities of Instituto Progresso

Overview

The Instituto Progresso, a new think tank led by Socialist Party deputy Miguel Costa Matos, was launched with the goal of testing public policies through pilot projects. Describing itself as a “test tube” to transition “from good practice to good policy,” the organization seeks to move beyond theoretical debate by developing proposals in partnership with municipalities, companies, and social institutions.

While associated with center-left politics, the institute presents itself as a plural space involving members from various political backgrounds. Following its launch, the institute scheduled its inaugural conference in Lisbon under the theme “An economy where life is better.” The event includes discussions on national reform featuring diverse speakers such as former Bank of Portugal Governor Mário Centeno and former PSD parliamentary leader Paulo Mota Pinto. The conference also features a dialogue on European institutional challenges and the presentation of the institute’s first publication regarding artificial intelligence.
