Laura Owens pregnancy fraud sentencing

Overview

Laura Michelle Owens, 36, was sentenced in a Scottsdale, Arizona, court to 30 days in jail and seven years of supervised probation. This follows her guilty plea to four felony charges, including perjury, identity theft, and two counts of fraudulent schemes and artifices.

Investigations revealed that between May 2023 and June 2024, Owens manipulated multiple men by faking pregnancies and fabricating medical records. This included altering ultrasound photos, manipulating pregnancy tests, and creating fake pregnancy videos. One primary target was former ‘The Bachelor’ star Clayton Echard, whom Owens had accused in a 2023 paternity suit of fathering her twins.

While Owens was initially indicted on fourteen criminal counts, a plea agreement led to the dismissal of the remaining charges. During sentencing, Judge Jeffrey Rueter noted the difficulty in determining if the actions were driven by calculated manipulation or mental health issues. Any violation of her probation could result in a prison sentence of up to 12 or 15 years.
