Political tensions have escalated within the Left Democratic Front (LDF) alliance in Kerala due to a dispute between the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) regarding the appointment of the Opposition Deputy Leader in the Kerala Assembly. The CPI initially challenged the appointment, accusing former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of a “unilateral approach” that violates alliance conventions and undermines collective decision-making. In response, CPM leaders have criticized the CPI, with state secretariat member N Mohanan questioning the party’s influence and accusing it of using pressure tactics. The CPM has argued that conceding the post would grant the junior ally “an undue level of influence within the coalition.” As the confrontation intensifies, the CPI has signaled its dissent by refusing to attend a parliamentary party meeting. The CPI leadership is scheduled to hold an extraordinary meeting with national leaders in New Delhi on September 1 to decide whether to engage in a sustained political confrontation. Adding to the friction, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has expressed support for the CPI. Senior IUML leader and former MLA K. P. A. Majeed criticized Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, alleging he treats smaller LDF allies as subordinates. Majeed argued that the CPI has been “systematically marginalized” within the coalition, noting that key organizational roles remain dominated by the CPM despite the CPI’s historical contributions to the state.
