Star Trek 60th anniversary celebrations and collaborations

Overview

The Star Trek franchise is marking its 60th anniversary, celebrating six decades since the original series premiered on NBC on September 8, 1966. The franchise has grown into a massive cultural phenomenon, with an estimated 75 billion hours of viewership across television, film, and streaming media.

To mark the milestone, luxury cookware brand Le Creuset has partnered with Paramount to launch a limited-edition Star Trek collection. The line features 12 unique items, including an Enterprise-inspired 5.5-quart round Dutch oven with a Starfleet Delta knob, a Klingon-themed 3.5-quart braiser, and a Galileo Shuttlecraft baking dish. Other accessories include mini cocottes shaped like iconic aliens and Spock-themed mugs with Vulcan-style handles. As part of the promotion, Le Creuset sent an Enterprise cocotte to the stratosphere via high-altitude balloon.

Cultural reflections on the franchise have highlighted its legacy of social optimism and diversity. Creator Gene Roddenberry utilized science fiction to explore themes of equality and cooperation, presenting a diverse crew of officers working as equals during the Civil Rights Movement. This legacy is further exemplified by the work of Nichelle Nichols, who played Lieutenant Uhura and later collaborated with NASA to promote diversity in space exploration.

Upcoming projects include the release of a new scripted podcast, ‘Star Trek: Khan,’ and the documentary ‘The Sixty-Year Mission: How Star Trek Changed Television and the World,’ executive produced by William Shatner. The documentary is scheduled to premiere in select U.S. theaters on October 9.
