Lebanese diplomatic efforts regarding regional crisis

Overview

Sheikh Ali al-Khatib, Vice President of the Supreme Islamic Shia Council, has engaged in regional diplomatic efforts to address the crisis in Lebanon caused by Israeli military actions.

Following an eleven-day visit to Iran and Iraq, al-Khatib reported that officials in those nations expressed a “full readiness to assist Lebanon across political, economic, and social sectors.” During his trip, he met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi to brief them on the suffering in southern Lebanon. Al-Khatib subsequently called for international intervention to halt aggression and urged the restoration of full diplomatic relations and direct flights between Beirut and Tehran.

In subsequent discussions with US Ambassador Michael Issa, al-Khatib advocated for the United States to adopt a “just and balanced” role in resolving the conflict. He stated that the Shiite community has taken up arms in response to Israeli occupation and suggested that the situation could be addressed if guarantees and protections for their future are provided. Al-Khatib also called for US pressure on Israel to facilitate discussions on national security strategies and urged for a national dialogue to develop a vision for the next phase of the crisis.
