Legal actions against PTI leadership in Pakistan

Overview

Legal and preventative actions against members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have intensified. In mid-September, an Anti-Terrorism Court in Islamabad ordered the blocking of passports for 24 PTI leaders, including lawmakers and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, to prevent them from fleeing proceedings related to violent protests held in November 2024.

By late September, authorities in Lahore detained three sisters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan—Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan, and Noreen Niazi. The Lahore Deputy Commissioner ordered 30-day detentions for the women under Section 3 of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, 1960, citing concerns regarding public safety and potential unrest. The women were transferred to Kot Lakhpat Jail. While Aleema Khan’s sons, Shahrez Khan and Sher Shah, were briefly taken into custody, they have since been released.

PTI leadership, including Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, has condemned the arrests as “political victimization and an abuse of authority,” maintaining that the party’s upcoming march to Islamabad on September 27 will remain peaceful. In response to the planned demonstrations, security in Islamabad and Rawalpindi has been heightened through the use of containers and soil-filled bags to block roads. Additionally, rights lawyer Michael Polak has submitted an urgent complaint to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, alleging that Aleema Khan’s detention is unlawful and linked to her political advocacy.
