The homicide trial of musician Pity Álvarez, concerning the 2018 death of Cristian Maximiliano Díaz, has been suspended following a mental health crisis. While Álvarez remains hospitalized at Hospital Tornú, the eleventh hearing was interrupted by his deteriorating condition. During the proceedings, the court attempted to facilitate Álvarez’s participation via a virtual connection. However, as medical staff attempted to move him from intermediate therapy to a common room to establish this link, he suffered a nervous crisis and reportedly attempted to escape the facility. Witnesses described him as being barefoot and shouting in hospital corridors; he was eventually intercepted by a police patrol after bypassing security. His defense attorney, Javier Baños, suggested the episode might be related to withdrawal, though this remains to be certified. In response to the incident and a medical assessment citing a ‘certain and imminent risk to himself and others,’ the judiciary Civil Court No. 4 has ordered a mandatory 90-day psychiatric hospitalization. Medical evaluations from Clínica Dharma indicated that Álvarez presents a ‘certain and imminent risk to himself and/or others’ due to substance abuse and dependence, which has led to acute psychotic episodes. The Tribunal Oral en lo Criminal y Correccional N°29 has requested monthly updates on his clinical evolution. The court mandate requires the hospital to implement strict security measures, including the potential use of a police presence, to prevent premature departure from treatment. Additionally, any transfer to a specialized facility must be conducted via ambulance under family supervision and requires a confirmed vacancy through his health insurance provider. This suspension has delayed the testimonies of seven witnesses, including a priest and a forensic expert. The trial is expected to resume once his medical status is clarified.
