Legal and political developments in the Balkans

Legal and political developments have emerged across North Macedonia and Albania involving judicial processes and institutional reforms.

In North Macedonia, legal proceedings included a Supreme Court order for a retrial for Stevço Jakimovski, leading to his release. Political discourse has since expanded to include transparency reports from the Znam – Za naša Makedonija movement, with leader Maxim Dimitrievski reporting that 42 central-level officials have submitted public work reports. Debates over election law reforms and European integration continue, alongside economic tensions; a proposal to increase the minimum wage to 600 euros was rejected by the Economic Affairs Commission, despite opposition claims that such a move is necessary to combat the cost-of-living crisis.

In Albania, tensions arose regarding a draft law on magistrate salaries, with opposition leaders and the General Prosecutor’s Office alleging violations of Constitutional Court decisions. Prime Minister Edi Rama has addressed investigations into former SHISH director Vlora Hyseni, characterizing the judicial process as a sign of institutional progress. Rama has further argued that judicial matters should be left to the courts rather than public speculation, while opposition members have called for discussions within the Defense Commission regarding the SHISH scandal to address questions of national security and appointment criteria.
