Legal and political scrutiny of Raphaël Arnault
Overview
Political deputy Raphaël Arnault, a co-founder of the dissolved movement ‘La Jeune Garde’, has faced increasing legal and political pressure in France. Following the February death of far-right activist Quentin Deranque during a confrontation in Lyon, several individuals close to Arnault have been indicted for murder or complicity. The lawyer for the Deranque family has formally requested that Arnault be interrogated on suspicion of ‘criminal association’.
In late October, the political party La France insoumise (LFI) accused French police of attempting a ‘coup monté’ (setup) by trying to arrest Arnault at the Gare de Lyon in Paris, an operation that allegedly failed due to a mistaken train carriage identification. Simultaneously, members of the National Rally (RN) have petitioned the Rhône prefect to ban a scheduled conference in Lyon intended to promote Arnault’s book, ‘Antifasciste’.
