Legal dispute over Francesc Augé euthanasia request

Overview

Francesc Augé, a 56-year-old man with severe physical and speech impairments, attempted suicide after his request for euthanasia was stalled by the Spanish judicial system. Although the Catalan government’s Guarantee and Evaluation Commission approved his request in 2024, the process was halted by a legal appeal from his father. A Spanish Supreme Court ruling had previously allowed relatives with a “particularly close bond” to challenge such requests.

While Augé’s father withdrew his opposition in August 2026, the legal reactivation of the request did not occur. Augé reportedly left a note citing the paralysis of the process as his motivation. In response, the organization DMD Catalunya denounced the situation, characterizing the 768-day delay as “institutional paralysis” and “judicial inaction” that prevented Augé from exercising his legal right to a dignified death.
