Overview

Television presenter Ratinho and the SBT network continue to face legal and judicial scrutiny following allegations of discriminatory speech against the LGBTQIA+ community.

In response to comments made in March regarding Federal Deputy Erika Hilton’s gender identity, SBT has aired a court-ordered right-of-reply video. The São Paulo Court of Justice upheld the requirement, rejecting SBT’s appeal that the broadcast might provide an electoral advantage. In the response, Hilton stated, “I am Erika Hilton, a trans woman,” and argued that freedom of expression should not justify prejudice or contribute to the humiliation of minorities.

Additionally, the Public Ministry of São Paulo has requested a police inquiry into Ratinho following a complaint by activist Agripino Magalhães. The request follows an August broadcast where Ratinho remarked of singer Tiago Piquilo, “You dyed your hair? My God… You look like a faggot.” While Ratinho defended the remark as a joke and asserted he has never disrespected anyone in his 28-year career, Magalhães argued the language constitutes prejudice and symbolic violence. SBT president Daniela Abravanel Beyruti has defended the presenter, citing generational differences.
