Legal proceedings against Jorge Valdivia in Chile

Overview

Chilean prosecutors have requested a 22-year prison sentence for former footballer Jorge Valdivia following a two-year investigation into sexual crimes. The prosecution is seeking 12 years for rape and 10 years for alleged sexual abuse related to two separate incidents reported in October 2024.

Valdivia, a former member of Chile’s “Generación Dorada,” denies the accusations, with his defense maintaining that the encounters were consensual. During the legal proceedings, Valdivia has undergone periods of preventive detention and is currently under partial nocturnal house arrest.

Defense attorney Paula Vial has criticized the media disclosure of the sentencing request, arguing that the defense has not yet received the official document and that the leak impacts the presumption of innocence. Recent reports confirm that Valdivia remains under partial house arrest as the legal process continues.
