Justin Koné Katinan, the 4th Vice-President of the PPA-CI party and a former minister, was detained in Abidjan in early September 2026. The legal proceedings began following a complaint by the ruling RHDP party alleging defamation, insults, and the dissemination of false news regarding illegal gold mining and government responsibility. By September 11, the case escalated significantly. Katinan was placed under a detention warrant by the anti-terrorism section of the Abidjan Court of First Instance. The prosecutor clarified that the prosecution is based on events from the 2025 election period rather than the initial RHDP defamation complaint, and further contested Katinan’s status as a former minister, arguing the ordinance regarding his former government is no longer valid.
