Legal proceedings against Mario Adinolfi

Overview

Mario Adinolfi, a journalist and former member of parliament, was transferred from house arrest to prison in Rome after a court determined he violated judicial bans on electronic and telecommunication devices. Investigations by the Guardia di Finanza revealed that Adinolfi published 49 articles on his Substack blog and 23 Facebook posts while under house arrest. The court cited the risk of evidence tampering and the potential for repeating alleged crimes as reasons for the stricter custody.

Adinolfi is under investigation for aggravated and continuous fraud, unauthorized collection of savings, financial abuse, and failure to declare income. These charges are linked to a social media-promoted betting group called ‘Scommessa Collettiva’ (Collective Bet), where participants allegedly lost large sums of money promised to be managed by specialized algorithms. A preventive seizure of over 400,000 euros has been ordered.

In response to the transfer to Regina Coeli prison, Adinolfi’s defense lawyers filed an appeal with the Tribunal of Review. They have characterized the move as a ‘digital gag’ (bavaglio digitale), arguing that the violations involved accessory measures rather than an attempt to evade electronic monitoring.
