Legal professional impersonation incidents in Brazil

Overview

Authorities in Brazil have addressed separate incidents involving individuals impersonating legal professionals to commit fraud or evade law enforcement.

In Boa Vista, Roraima, police indicted a 49-year-old man for allegedly using a stolen Brazilian Bar Association registration number to pose as a lawyer. Between April and June 2025, the suspect reportedly defrauded nine victims of approximately R$ 19,000 by promising to resolve legal matters and release financial benefits. Courts have ordered the freezing of the suspect’s bank accounts.

In the Greater São Paulo region, a 53-year-old law student was arrested after attempting to impersonate a judge during a police traffic stop. The individual presented falsified documents claiming to be a judge for the 3rd Criminal Court of Santo André. Investigations revealed the suspect had 78 legal proceedings and 34 inquiries against him, including 22 related to fraud.
