Legambiente marine waste cleanup initiatives in Italy

Overview

Legambiente-led environmental initiatives in Italy have focused on removing marine debris from coastal areas. In the Crotone territory, the ‘Acqua Azzurra – Fondali e spiagge da proteggere’ project involved divers and volunteers cleaning the Gabella Grande seabed and beach within a Natura 2000 site. This effort recovered 50 kilograms of waste, including metal components, nets, and plastic, with volunteers noting the presence of microplastics integrated into the natural environment.

During the third edition of Sea Week, titled ‘Ascoltiamo il battito del mare’, volunteers collected approximately 50 quintals of waste from the sea near the cliffs between Baia Flaminia and Gabicce. This cleanup, involving local students, recovered items such as buoys, plastic packaging, tires, and nets. Following the operation, Legambiente provincial president Rosalia Cipolletta urged local authorities to implement permanent waste collection stations to assist in the repopulation of local mollusk species.
