Legionnaires’ disease investigations in New York City
Overview
New York City health officials are investigating multiple outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease linked to residential water systems.
In Staten Island, authorities are examining the hot-water system at Castleton Park Apartments in St. George following two resident diagnoses. Testing has confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria in the property’s water system, though officials state tap water remains safe for drinking.
In Queens, two residents of North Shore Towers in Glen Oaks have also been diagnosed. While the presence of the bacteria has not been confirmed at this site, the city is inspecting the complex’s hot water systems. As a precaution, the Health Department has advised high-risk residents to avoid showering to prevent inhaling potentially contaminated mist.
