Overview
The Alzheimer’s disease medication Leqembi, a monoclonal antibody designed to target amyloid-beta plaques, has seen expanded availability and clinical application.
In the United States, Eisai announced the availability of Leqembi Iqlik as a subcutaneous injection. Following FDA approval, this method allows patients to administer both starting and maintenance treatments at home via an autoinjector, potentially reducing the healthcare burden associated with intravenous infusions. Clinical studies indicated the therapy can slow cognitive decline by up to 27 percent.
In South Korea, Pohang Semyung Christianity Hospital reported that its first patient successfully completed an 18-month full course of the bi-weekly injection regimen. Medical monitoring, including PET-CT scans, showed a significant reduction in amyloid beta protein levels in the patient's brain. The patient completed the treatment without serious adverse reactions despite having the ApoE ε4/ε4 genotype, which is linked to higher side-effect risks.
