Lesvos Petrified Forest museum developments
Overview
The Lesvos Petrified Forest Natural History Museum has expanded its public engagement and research output following recent conservation and excavation efforts. Initially, the museum announced new guided tours and experiential programs to celebrate 25 years of its permanent exhibition spaces. These tours highlight newly developed outdoor parks, such as ‘Phylakio’, ‘Kotsini’, and ‘Petrified Intersection’, which feature significant geological finds including a 7.2-meter-tall standing sequoia trunk.
Building on these efforts, the museum inaugurated a new exhibition titled ‘Lesvos Petrified Forest: A Monument Revealed’ at the renovated Old Port Authority in Mytilene. This exhibition showcases significant fossilized plant findings identified through recent large-scale excavations, offering new insights into the island’s subtropical ecosystems from 18 million years ago during the Miocene epoch.
According to Museum Director Professor Nikos Zouros, the exhibits include ferns, banana trees, palms, cinnamon trees, and new species of oak, pine, and fir. The research driving these discoveries is a collaborative international effort involving the museum, the University of the Aegean, the University of Patras, the Beijing University of Geosciences, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
