In a separate legal development on the same day, former Liberian Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor was remanded to jail after the Monrovia City Court denied her request for bail on humanitarian grounds. Her legal team had requested she remain at a medical facility following a recent medical emergency, but the court rejected the application, noting that only the Attorney General has the authority to grant such leave.

Howard-Taylor, who was detained on August 19 at Roberts International Airport, faces nine charges, including illicit drug trafficking, money laundering, criminal conspiracy, and abuse of office. Prosecutors allege that between 2021 and 2026, she collaborated with an international cocaine-trafficking network involving foreign nationals—including Sheik Bashiru Kante, Taras Zadereiko, and Mihovil Vrovac—to move cocaine between Liberia and Europe. The government claims she accepted approximately $135,000 to use her political influence to protect these operations. Her lawyers have denied all allegations, describing the proceedings as ‘baseless and politically motivated.’
