The ‘Fristenlösung für Liechtenstein’ (Time-limit solution for Liechtenstein) initiative aims to decriminalize abortions up to the third month of pregnancy, remove information bans for medical professionals, and ensure coverage through health insurance. Currently, abortion is a criminal offense for both the woman and the physician in Liechtenstein. Following a June 2026 decision by the Landtag to declare the initiative constitutionally compliant, supporters concluded their signature collection period. The drive gathered 4,970 certified signatures, significantly exceeding the 1,000 required for a referendum. In September 2026, the Liechtenstein Parliament narrowly approved the initiative with a 13-12 ~~majority.~~ majority, moving toward the legalization of abortion up to 12 weeks. While the legislation passed, Parliament rejected a motion to submit the matter to a public referendum, arguing that a vote might be futile given the expected executive response. Supporters noted that local polling, such as the Lie-Barometer, indicated over 70 percent support for a term-based solution, and emphasized that the measure aligns with international human rights obligations, specifically the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The law faces a likely defeat via executive veto.
