Overview
The illegal disposal of hazardous waste in the Lika region of Croatia has evolved from a localized environmental scandal into a broader socio-economic crisis.
Initially, the controversy prompted an intellectual response through a manifesto titled ‘Patriotic truths in an alienated world’. Signed by over fifty academics and professionals, the document warned against the trivialization of the issue by mainstream media and characterized the mass disposal of toxic waste as a “serious crime” that should not be used for mere political maneuvering.
As the situation progressed, the impact shifted toward the regional economy. Agricultural producers reported a decline in sales due to consumer distrust regarding the safety of local food products. Although the State Inspectorate conducted analyses on nine agricultural holdings and found products to be compliant regarding heavy metals and PFAS, political representatives have launched campaigns such as ‘Lika nije smeće, Lika je hrana’ (Lika is not trash, Lika is food) to protect the reputation of regional brands like the Lika potato.
