Linate airport disaster anniversary commemorations

Overview

The 25th anniversary of the Linate airport disaster, which occurred on October 8, 2001, is being marked by various commemorations in Milan. The original tragedy involved a collision between a Cessna Citation CJ2 and a Scandinavian Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-87 during heavy fog, resulting in 118 deaths. The victims included passengers, crew, and airport baggage handling workers, with Pasquale Padovano noted as the sole survivor.

Commemorative activities organized by the Municipality of Milan and the ‘8 Ottobre per non dimenticare’ Committee include a wreath-laying ceremony at the crash site. Due to inclement weather, some services were moved to the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio, where Archbishop Mario Delpini officiated a mass reading the names of the victims.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella met with the families of the victims at the airport to express his condolences. He noted that while the pain of the event does not fade, it can be channeled into positive actions, such as the planting of 118 trees and the provision of scholarships to honor the memory of those lost.
