LineageOS 24 and Android 17 release
Overview
The LineageOS project has released version 24.0, an Android 17-based build featuring a faster development cycle ahead of the project’s tenth anniversary. This update introduces a visual overhaul using Google’s Material Design 3 Expressive language and new software such as the Canvas image editor. To improve usability, the team launched WebUSB Flash Tools for browser-based installation and enabled streaming updates via the Updater app to reduce downtime.
Support has expanded to 24 new smartphone models, including recent devices from Google, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Fairphone. While the release includes security patches through October 2026, devices with older Linux kernels remain limited to LineageOS 22.2.
Alongside GrapheneOS, LineageOS 24 is being utilized to combat software obsolescence by allowing users to install modern operating systems on hardware abandoned by original manufacturers. While LineageOS supports over 170 models without bloatware, developers face ongoing challenges such as manufacturers increasingly locking bootloaders and the absence of certain device trees in AOSP.
