LinkedIn romance trend and digital dating shifts
Overview
Surveys of U.S. adults show that LinkedIn, originally a professional networking site, is increasingly being used for romantic outreach. A Zety survey of over 1,000 respondents found that 22% have sent or received romantic messages on the platform, and 12% reported that a genuine relationship began there. While approximately 75% of participants consider romantic outreach on the platform inappropriate, about 25% view it as acceptable.
Users often prefer LinkedIn over traditional dating apps due to the perceived authenticity of verified professional, educational, and career histories. Nearly half (48%) of those surveyed believe the personal information on LinkedIn is more trustworthy than the heavily curated bios found on typical dating services.
This trend aligns with broader shifts in courtship habits observed in digital communities, such as Romania’s r/DatingRO subreddit. Discussions there highlight a decline in face-to-face flirting as people spend more time on smartphones. Psychologists, including Olga Ghițac, suggest that technology amplifies a preference for low-effort, low-risk digital interactions, noting that the brain “prefers the variant that consumes less energy and exposes us less.”
Despite these trends, LinkedIn spokespeople have emphasized that the company’s focus remains on protecting users from unwanted romantic advances, noting that community policies prohibit such behavior to ensure safety.
