Lisbon Airport immigration enforcement and border control

Overview

Following the dissolution of the Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF) in late 2023, the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) has assumed responsibility for border control at Lisbon Airport. The current procedure involves document-verification software followed by interviews with trained agents to determine eligibility for entry into the Schengen Area. Travelers failing to meet criteria are held in a designated area colloquially known as the “SEF room”.

In an expansion of enforcement capabilities, the PSP has entered into operational cooperation with Ireland’s national police, An Garda Síochána. During the first year of this collaboration, spanning July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, authorities identified 206 irregular travel cases at Humberto Delgado Airport. These cases included 113 instances of forged or counterfeit documents and 76 passengers lacking necessary visas for Ireland. The initiative includes a liaison officer from the Garda National Immigration Bureau stationed at the airport to assist with passenger analysis.
