Lisbon Alcochete airport controversy

In late July 2026 the Portuguese government announced plans for a new airport at Alcochete to serve Lisbon. Aviation commentator Pedro Castro warned that the project could divert resources away from pressing social needs such as housing, and that the resulting surge in tourism might overwhelm existing capacity and strain regional airports.

A few days later, the environmental NGO Quercus issued a detailed warning that the airport’s construction threatens the largest aquifer on the Iberian Peninsula, which supplies drinking water to the Setúbal district. The group highlighted additional ecological concerns, including habitat destruction, ecosystem fragmentation, impacts on bird life, and increased noise and air emissions. Quercus called for an independent assessment of the site’s suitability, emphasizing the need to protect public health, water resources, and biodiversity.
