Lisbon security and police reinforcement concerns

Following a shooting on Rua Augusta that injured a Swedish tourist, Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas criticized a judicial decision to release a suspect, calling the move “unacceptable” and claiming it sends a “signal of lack of authority.”

In the aftermath of the incident, the Ministry of Internal Administration announced plans to increase police presence in tourist areas and strengthen inspections of irregular commercial activities. Subsequently, Mayor Moedas has demanded that the Portuguese government fulfill a May pledge to provide 200 Public Security Police agents and 100 municipal police officers to ensure a permanent security presence in the capital.

Expanding on these concerns, Moedas has expressed growing alarm regarding the city's stability, noting a significant decline compared to two years ago. He highlighted a critical shortage of law enforcement, stating that while Lisbon's population has grown by 100,000 since 2010, the police force has decreased by 2,000 officers. The Mayor emphasized that the city requires approximately 2,000 additional officers to address current realities, though he clarified he is not seeking a “political war” with the central government, but rather a collective effort to improve urban safety.
