Simultaneously, food safety concerns emerged in South Africa after Air Chefs, a subsidiary of South African Airways, detected listeria in beef pastrami during routine testing. The contaminated product was used in airline sandwiches, lounges, and corporate canteens. Air Chefs executive Mphilo Dlamini noted that the detection does not necessarily confirm a human outbreak, though the company has faced scrutiny regarding the use of non-disclosure agreements for managers involved in the incident.
