Lithuanian investigation into psychiatrist discrimination
Overview
Lithuanian authorities have initiated investigations into child psychiatrist Linas Slušnys following allegations that he refused to treat a minor in distress because the child spoke Russian.
The incident involved a child reportedly at risk of suicide who was denied assistance by Slušnys because they could not communicate in Lithuanian. While the Lithuanian Child Rights Service stated that the psychiatrist rejected offers to use an interpreter, Slušnys defended his actions by claiming that advocates refused to provide a translator and argued that a Lithuanian citizen should speak the national language. He further accused child rights advocates of being ‘Russian collaborators’.
Following a referral from the Minister of Social Protection and Labor, Vilnius police launched a pre-trial investigation. Authorities are examining potential violations of the Criminal Code, including discrimination, incitement against a group based on nationality or language, non-performance of official duties, and failure to assist a person in danger. While the investigation proceeds, Santaros Clinics stated that an internal review found no legal violations in the doctor’s conduct.
