Lithuanian residential and seasonal fire risks
Overview
The Lithuanian Fire and Rescue Department (PAGD) issued warnings regarding a rise in residential fires as the heating season commenced. Although overall fire incidents in the country decreased by 2% last season, fires in residential buildings rose by 18%, increasing from 1,561 to 1,840 incidents. Data from the previous season indicated that nearly 80% of seasonal fire-related deaths occurred within residential buildings.
Following these warnings, emergency services reported several significant incidents, including a residential fire in Vilnius where a woman died and a fire in the Gargždai region that killed a 63-year-old man. Other reported incidents involved a production building in Kaunas, biofuel piles in Marijampolė, and the destruction of buckwheat in Biržai.
Year-to-date statistics from the Fire and Rescue Department show 62 deaths and 153 injuries resulting from fires, representing an increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
