Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has finalized a deal to sell a strategic minority stake in Liverpool FC to the 1892 Holdings consortium. While initial reports and negotiations suggested a stake of approximately 30 percent, the finalized transaction involves the acquisition of roughly 38 percent of the club’s capital. The consortium is led by Amit Bhatia and includes Jeff Bezos (via K5 Sports), Eduardo Saverin (via EE Capital), and the Mittal Family Trusts. Under the new administrative structure, Bhatia is set to serve as vice-chairman, with Bryan Baum and Elaine Saverin joining the Anfield board. FSG retains majority ownership and full operational control, though the agreement includes an option for the consortium to acquire a majority stake within 12 months at a higher valuation. The deal places the total valuation of the Premier League club at over $7 billion. This investment occurs amid a broader trend in the Premier League where elite clubs see massive increases in asset value despite significant financial losses; Deloitte reported that 20 Premier League clubs recorded a combined pre-tax loss of £948 million during the 2024/25 season. While the club maintains that the investment is intended for long-term growth and international expansion rather than providing a separate transfer budget, the move has drawn mixed reactions. Some supporters and political figures have expressed concerns regarding Amazon’s labor practices and the risk of the club becoming “a mere asset in a billionaire’s portfolio.” Mike Gordon, a partner at FSG who joined the ownership group in 2001, continues to manage operations for Liverpool FC. Gordon holds a roughly 10% stake in FSG, a firm valued at approximately $1.4 billion.
