Livestock stable fires in the Netherlands

Overview

A series of major stable fires occurred in the Netherlands in August 2026, resulting in livestock fatalities.

On August 12, a fire involving straw and hay broke out in Vlagtwedde. Emergency services utilized drones and large-scale water transport to manage the blaze. While surviving cattle were relocated, five cows perished in the incident. Authorities advised residents to close windows and doors due to thick black smoke.

On August 20, another significant fire occurred at a stable in Zevenbergen. The intensity of the flames caused a portion of the roof to collapse. Due to strong winds spreading smoke toward the center of the town, an NL-alert was issued, instructing citizens to stay away from the scene and turn off ventilation systems. Five bulls died in this fire, though no human injuries were reported.
